I have stayed in numerous hotels throughout my life where the only thing that changes during my stay is the scenery. This time, I was determined to find an experience where the surroundings influenced how I spent my days. A retreat in a plantation near Chikmagalur seemed a great place for that. It offered coffee farms, cool climate, and leisurely mornings, so I booked three nights without plans.
Chikmagalur is in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, where coffee was grown for centuries. It has hills covered with shade trees and pepper vines, and estates stretch along the hills for miles. I knew before I arrived that this trip would be nothing like city trips.
Arriving in Chikmagalur without the fatigue
Chikmagalur does not have its own airport. Therefore, travellers need to connect by air and by ground transportation. Bengaluru is the closest major airport, around 250 kilometres away, and it takes around five hours to reach Chikmagalur. Since I knew it would be a long day, I looked for a business cabin on the flight to Bengaluru, hoping to land rested instead of worn out.
It was worth it. The seat had far more room than I am used to, boarding was unhurried, and a fresh breakfast arrived soon after takeoff. I had time to read and close my eyes for a short while. By the time the car pulled out of the airport, I felt ready for the winding road ahead.
Mornings on the estate near Chikmagalur
The most enjoyable thing about the trip was that every day started with me waking up and going to a veranda to watch as the mist was rising above coffee trees. The air carried a fresh scent of soil and slightly damp leaves. The birdsong was loud, and workers on the estate already appeared on the paths.
A guided plantation walk followed, led by someone who had grown up on the property. He explained how arabica and robusta differ, how cherries are hand-picked, and why shade trees matter. I asked more questions than I expected to, and he answered every one without hurry.
Coffee, tasted properly in Chikmagalur
We reached the factory where beans were dried, sorted, and roasted. I tasted a cup made from my newly discovered beans, following a brief explanation of the brewing process. It was much better than what I am used to at home. I also learned how to appreciate the taste of coffee in the right way.
This was the most fulfilling experience of the trip because it brought the visual, smell, and taste experiences together. It made me realise why coffee in that area is popular and treated with importance.
Meals and quiet evenings in Chikmagalur
Food was made well and simply. Malnad cuisine uses rice, lentils, vegetables, and coconut, and I loved eating plenty of it. One can have a heavy thali for lunch and a light supper by late evening. Nothing is done in a hurry. Evenings are the quietest times of the day. I read outside, listened to the sounds of nature, and watched the sky change from golden to deep blue.
Day trips from Chikmagalur
One morning I drove to Mullayanagiri, one of Karnataka’s highest peaks at roughly 1,930 meters. The final climb is a set of stone steps, and the view over the Chandra Drona range is worth the effort. Go early, because clouds can cover the summit by mid-morning.
On another day, I visited Baba Budangiri, a hill linked to the region’s early coffee history. It was a pleasant half-day outing with winding roads and pleasant weather. If you have a third day, Hebbe Falls near Kemmanagundi is a good choice, though the final stretch involves a trek.
Practical notes for Chikmagalur
The best time to visit is September to March, with clear skies and cool weather. Take a light sweater for the evening and a good pair of walking shoes. Mobile phone connection can be weak at higher estates, so inform your family beforehand.
Why Chikmagalur is worth the slower pace
I left with a bag full of freshly roasted beans and a strong desire to go back. This place works because you do not hurry about anything, from taking a flight to enjoying your first cup on the veranda. If you love peace and comfort, nothing can beat a plantation resort near Chikmagalur.
